Two topics were addressed at The National Workers' Compensation and Disability Conference® & Expo Nov. 20-22 in Las Vegas that has the attention of the workers' comp community.

One program titled Emerging Trends in the Adopting of Medical Treatment Guidelines explored the challenges medical professionals face when deciding which medical treatment guidelines to follow when many differing guidelines exist.

The second program, Physicians Speak Out on Whether More Care Early Equals Better Outcomes, addressed that research shows that paying for more medical care early in a workers' compensation claim produces the best medical and cost outcomes. The finding, however, is contrary to most utilization review guidelines.

Dr. Douglas Benner, Chief Medical Officer of EK Health, was one of the prominent members of the panel who tackled these topics. Benner brings expertise as the top medical executive of EK Health, a leading national workers' compensation managed care company, and credentials as diplomat of the American Board of Preventative Medicine in Occupational Medicine.

As founding Medical Director of Kaiser Permanente's Northern California's Employee Health Services until 2011, which included over 70,000 employees and physicians, Benner was named among "The Most Influential People in California Workers' Compensation" in 2010 by Workers' Comp Executive.
